In Uganda some good policies reduced population living below line poverty from 56% in 1992 to 31% in 2006. In the same way the ratio of underweight children decrease from 25,5% to 20,4%.
The second Millennium Development Goal, universal primary education, is not far from being achieved within 2015. Both school fees and textbooks have been paid by the government. Thanks to this 84% of the whole children population could go to school in 2006. The percentage of female attending schools increased from 31% to 42%.
In the country there are about 900.000 people HIV infected (6,4 % of the adult population). In 1992 they were the 18%. But the improvement is not enough: HIV/AIDS is still one of the major causes of mortality in Uganda.
The 4th MDG is far to be achieved: 76 children in 1.000 die before the age of one and 137 in 1.000 die before the age of five. The major causes of children mortality are malaria, meningitis and HIV/AIDS. About 50% of these children die at home.
The 5th MDG will not be achieved either, until 2015. Maternal mortality ratio is 435 per 100.000 live births. The causes of maternal mortality are: the poor health facilities; the distance from homes to the hospitals; lack of ante-natal care.
